Sky News host Graham Richardson says only NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro could have won the upcoming Eden-Monaro by-election for the Coalition. Mr Richardson said “if Barilaro had run, then I believe Labor would lose on Saturday, such is the popularity of Barilaro in Queanbeyan,” He said Mr Barilaro’s capacity to make inroads into what would normally be a solid Labor vote was remarkable.

John Howard warns China is becoming ‘more authoritarian’ under Xi Jinping | Sky News AustraliaFormer prime minister John Howard has warned China is becoming more authoritarian under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, with Beijing increasingly determined to “throw its weight around” the Asia-Pacific region.\n\n In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Mr Howard said China has changed significantly since his tenure as prime minister. \n\n'Under President Xi Jinping’s two predecessors, Hu Jintao Jiang Zemin, China's attitude towards the west was very different,' he said. \n\n'They were both dedicated communist, Marxist, Leninist and so forth, no doubt about that, but they looked for cooperation, and you saw the possibility of building, pragmatically albeit, building a close relationship between the two countries and the west. \n\n'But under Xi Jinping, China has become more authoritarian internally, it is more assertive in the region, it is throwing its weight around. \n\n'And we have to recognise that, and consistent with that, continue to toil away at keeping the bilateral relationship together. \n\n'It’s very important we don't give up a practical relationship with China.' \n\nAustralia and China’s bilateral relationship has soured since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. \n\nThe worsening of trade relations comes as Australia was the first nation to call for an independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19. \n\nChina recently slapped an 80 per cent tariff on barley producers, banned four beef exporters and urged its students not to study in Australia. \n\nBeijing has also been more assertive in the region, exemplified by its decision to make it illegal for anyone in Hong Kong to engage in secessionist, subversive, or 'terrorist' activities. \n\nExperts claim the new law breaches the Sino-British Joint Declaration which was signed in 1984, which gave Hong Kong almost full autonomy for 50 years after Britain handed the territory back to China in 1997. \n\nMr Howard said the Morrison government was right to announce a $270 billion boost to defence

Hotel quarantine breaches to blame for Melbourne outbreaks | Sky News AustraliaMore than 300,000 Melbourne residents will be thrust back into strict lockdown at midnight after Premier Daniel Andrews was forced to take extreme measures to curb the surge in coronavirus cases. \n\nUnder the rules, no one will be allowed to leave their home unless it’s for an essential purpose and everyone outside the 10 declared hotspots will not be allowed to enter. \n\nPremier Andrews said the outbreaks were partly the result of breaches in the state’s hotel quarantine system after at least 50 cases could be traced back to security breaches. \n\nMeanwhile, the Queensland border battle is finally over after the Palaszczuk Government announced all states, bar Victoria, could visit the sunshine state from Friday week. \n\nFollowing her announcement, the Premier hit out at her critics including the Prime Minister. \n\n“These border wars have got to stop and I think a national leader should have been able to bring all of the states and territories together and frankly I’m a bit sick that Queensland has been singled out,” she said. \n\nMeanwhile in NSW, people are waking to relaxed restrictions today, including the scrapping of a 50 person maximum at indoor venues. \n
