can now add another thing to the list of things getting more expensive - public transport.
Opal fares increase from Monday - but the state government says the price hike is "below inflation" and will cost passengers about $1 extra a week. The cost of trips will go up an average of 3 per cent, "much lower than the 5 per cent increase recommended by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal ," Transport for NSW said. There will be no change to the $50 weekly cap for adults, $25 cap for youth and concession holders and the $2.50 daily cap for pensioners.
"Opal fare adjustments for the next 12 months have been kept to a minimum and for the vast majority of our customers these fare changes will mean an increase of less than $1 a week," Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer Howard Collins said. "We want our customers to continue to access affordable and convenient public transport across light rail, metro, trains, ferries and buses."
