Juan Soto awaiting MRI results, but Padres believe oblique injury is 'mild,' Austin Nola could resume moderate baseball activity soon after sustain slight nose fracture
While his superstar left fielder was still awaiting the results of an MRI, the Padres’ second-year manager was optimistic that what Juan Soto had felt in his left oblique was “fairly mild.” His starting catcher might also have caught a break; Austin Nola’s slightly fractured nose might allow him to resume moderate baseball activity in the next day or so.
He was ultimately whisked away on a medical cart while holding a towel to the front of his face as Melvin was left to contemplate the depth behind Nola, who last October started every inning of every postseason game for the Padres. Meanwhile, Nola has not only entrenched himself as the staff’s preferred target behind the plate, he was off to a fantastic start this spring at the plate. Through 12 games, he’s hitting .333/.500/.444 with one homer and more than twice as many walks as strikeouts in what the Padres can only hope is a step toward producing like he had at the start of the COVID-shortened 2020 season .
