‘Opening of a new world’: How international students are helping seniors to log on | daniellamariewh

When COVID-19 lockdowns hit in March 2020, newly arrived international student Salman Roubil was socially isolated and unable to find any paid work to support himself.

Roubil was matched with Glebe resident Glenn Massicks, who had no experience with technology, and the pair met weekly for one-on-one mentoring. The pensioner could not afford to pay for someone to teach him so jumped at the opportunity to be mentored by Roubil in one-on-one sessions.“I got a new phone and it was full of all sorts of magic, but I couldn’t even turn it on,” Massicks said.

“In the last couple of years there have been people in hospital, so I’ve been able to talk to them and send them messages and pictures, that’s been a tremendous opening of a new world,” he said.UTS pro vice-chancellor Verity Firth, who was appointed to the newly created role in February, said the mentoring program was part of the university’s efforts to make a difference in the local community.
