Andrea Cochran, 49, hugs friend, Remekia “Kat” Handy, 26, after listening to music performed by Houston Grand Opera singers.For about a dozen Mondays in the past 10 months, performers from the opera have come to Ecclesia to perform some of their favorite songs for the crowd that gathers every week for a free shower and a peaceful place to enjoy a coffee.
She listened to Canedo-González, then the soprano Renée Richardson as she read with her back to the stage. At times, she mouthed the lyrics.Canedo-González’s voice swept through the hall. How could someone not like music like that, Shropshire, who sat across from Tucker, wondered. And he wasn’t even using any instruments.The music continued to build. Tucker, face bowed over her book, placed her hands over her heart.
Not everyone was accustomed to engaging with beauty, she reasoned. Handy felt the same when seeing different people coping with life on the street. While it was easy to bury yourself in various coping mechanisms — drugs, anger, resignation — she thought it was a skill to remain alive to life’s beauties. She even saw a beauty in having nothing.
Across the room, Carter Carter, who joked before the recital that he’d probably fall asleep, did indeed have his eyes closed. But as Richardson sang a soaring version of the children’s Bible song “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” he nodded in rhythm to the music.
