There is a key reason that racing has to wait for Gillon McLachlan to announce if he will become Racing Victoria chairman.
The Flemington committee room on Melbourne Cup day was filled with faces of the city’s well-connected, a perfect setting for the latest scene of Operation Get Gill.
Few in the industry are willing to speak, but the biggest clue lies in McLachlan’s comments from last year when he finally stepped away from the AFL. He said he would not be deciding on his future until February. Two sources, who were not authorised to speak publicly because the process is confidential, told this masthead that McLachlan would be reluctant to commit to joining a board such as Racing Victoria – which paid eight directors a total of $970,000 last financial year – before he had mapped out his business life.
So the basis for Operation Get Gill took root. Melbourne’s three metropolitan clubs – the VRC, Melbourne Racing Club and Moonee Valley – were on board, overtures were made, and the wining and dining began.The sources said McLachlan was Carbines’ preferred candidate to fill the RV chairman’s role. They said McLachlan had also expressed an interest in the job.
He was handed a shortlist of candidates by a special interview panel last month – consisting of Hirst, Munz, VRC chairman Neil Wilson, Country Racing Victoria chairman Chas Armytage and a government representative – but McLachlan’s name was not among them because he still had not applied for the role.
