Opinion: A revitalized Civic Center would seal the deal on a new era for Downtown San Diego [Opinion]
Downtown is home to amazing sights that bring us pride as San Diegans. The sunset over a concert at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park and a united city coming together to support our Padres at Petco Park, among others.
This is in stark contrast to aspects of Downtown, where our shops, restaurants, residential buildings and major employment centers are seeing aBut the gravitational pull of our decaying civic core weighs down these steady steps forward. The good news is that on April 24, at the recommendation of Mayor Todd Gloria, the City Council voted to approve a major step in redeveloping these blocks into a place that can join the ranks of our other civic gems and meet our community’s needs.
This project could also allow Downtown to lead the way on some of our region’s biggest civic issues, including efforts to reduce homelessness, building housing that is affordable to San Diegans, and attracting good-paying jobs so we can chart an inclusive and equitable economic recovery.
