the number of people who visit Border Field State Park. Another way to think of this: More people visit Torrey Pines in a typical 10 days than visit Border Field each year.

These water flows have been made all the more unpredictable across recent decades by the continued growth of Tijuana’s urban population and the construction of border walls without adequate consideration of environmental impacts. Cross-border water flows now routinely wash out sections of Monument Road, the surface street that leads to the Border Field State Park entrance. They also frequently flood the only road that runs through the State Park, closing the park to automobiles. On several occasions this winter, they have washed out the foot trails, too, causing state officials to close Border Field even to pedestrians.

Members of our local coalition, the Friends of Friendship Park, believe that someday San Diegans will be as proud of “International Friendship Park” as they are of Balboa Park and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. In the meantime, we are proposing three simple, straightforward solutions to remedy a glaring and obvious case of inequitable public access.
