Now our presence has ended but the war has not. We will need to find a way to replace the capabilities that came with it. We will need to ensure that our fellow citizens, and those Afghans who stood beside us in the fight, aren’t in danger.
That is comfort for tomorrow. But for today, the 20th anniversary of 9/11, it is worth a moment of reflection and gratitude. Remember the courage of the first responders who rushed back into collapsing buildings. Remember the men and women who volunteered to defend us at the front lines of freedom and never came back or sustained life-altering injuries.
Those of us who were alive on 9/11 will never forget it even as we move past it. And we must tell the story to those who were not old enough to feel the horror and sadness of that day. Why? Because it will always be a part of who we are, and those who forget are doomed to be reminded by another tragedy sometime in the future.
