Opinion: Does South Bay really need a university? [Opinion]

” : Carving out an exemption in California’s Surplus Land Act so that Chula Vista can continue its decades’ long pursuit of a four-year college would be misguided policy and sets up a false binary of housing or education. “The property can be used for both university and housing purposes,” according to a state Housing and Community Development official.

A larger question is whether there exists a need for another four-year institution in the region, given the pace at whichnationally and in California, especially among four-year institutions. Southwestern College offers cooperative baccalaureate programs with San Diego State University and Point Loma Nazarene where students never have to leave the Southwestern College campus, the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley extension takes students directly from Chula Vista to campus and there are increasing options for all-online college degrees.
