Opinion | 'After 20 years of this national experiment, there is no proof that an education accountability system built on standardized tests has improved student learning or teacher effectiveness.'

The report stated, “Closure of ACHS is likely the best option, allowing students to attend surrounding, higher-performing schools which are geographically close.” The most geographically close high school is 3.5 miles away, hardly within walking distance.

These schools share similar demographics of high poverty and high percentages of minority students and English language learners. These students and schools have not failed. The inequities of society and a discriminatory accountability system has failed them. By closing schools due to low test scores, these policies are blowing up the social and historic fabric of local neighborhoods across the nation.

What politicians failed to factor in, and which all sound experiments require, is the influence of independent variables. Some of the children suffer from the damaging effects of poverty, while others benefit from the financial security of a livable family income. Some children are raised speaking a foreign language, while others grow up speaking English.

learning or teacher effectiveness. What it has revealed are inequities and injustices of the system. Our evaluation system is not on a level playing field. This grand experiment of using high-stakes standardized tests to evaluate and rate students, teachers, and schools should end. It is destructive to our public school system and discriminatory toward our poorest and most vulnerable children.
