A Saskatchewan author says the recent changes to gender identity policies at schools show the sway of the conservative Christian movement.

It’s truly frightening when your government turns against you. When they abandon their duty to protect you, when they themselves promote actions that are counter to the law.with their policy on the “Use of Preferred First Names and Pronouns by Students” and restrictions on sex education in public schools.Their fixation on undermining public education and the rights of students to be free from gender-based discrimination is a not-too-subtle dog whistle to their far-right base.

In 2011-12, the Saskatchewan Party made the unprecedented move of providing public funding to formerly private evangelical Christian schools. This was done in direct contradiction of the Supreme Court of Canada’s rulings stating public institutions, such as public education, should be secular. Stories continued to break about other publicly funded Christian schools and their treatment of LBGTQ+ students who allege discrimination and harassment.

That’s the coward’s way out. They could defend their pronoun policy using Section 1 of the Charter, which allows for limiting rights if the government can provide clear and cogent reasons for the decision, along with evidence that tno other less intrusive means were available. One can only assume that the Saskatchewan Party is working with no evidence to support their pronoun policy and its restrictions on sex education.
