l, serving his time in prison , which leads me to wonder if there will be a Part 3 on his life next January. There is another side to this narrative, though, that the Chronicle should give equal space to.
Balanced coverage would include a retrospective of his victim, William Joseph Leinert, and how his family and friends have adjusted to his loss over the last 38 years. What I could find in brief research is that Mr. Leinert served in the U.S. Navy, he was born in St. Louis, married a girl named Mary Ruth, and he's buried in Grand View Memorial Park in Pasadena.
Did he have children? Grandchildren, who never got to meet him? Did his widow ever remarry? If he had children, were they able to attend college, or did they lose the family home and have to go to work after the loss of his income? Did he teach Sunday School or bowl or play softball, and if so, did those organizations have a tough time replacing him? Did very many young cabdrivers in Houston quit the profession after his murder, and if so, how did their lives end...
I don't know these answers, of course, and I have no connection to any of the parties. While I think it's valuable for the Chronicle to publish experiences from the perspective of criminals and to humanize them, it's equally important to do so for both affected parties.Demetrius Johnson is free after 38 years in prison for the murder of a cab driver, which was hardly mentioned in the article. He, the victim, does not have the option to return home. He has been dead for 38 years.
