While public schools, a Democratic Party affiliate, closed without apology for a year, private-school teachers and administrators devised plans to get kids at their desks as much as possible.
We don’t mean to suggest the pandemic has produced the communion of the saints in the U.S. People expect to get paid for this effort. And from gig workers to software engineers, many are job-hopping and holding out for more money. Making calls to company “help” lines has become more labyrinthine than ever.
Mr. Biden came into office declaring his intention to enact public spending on social-welfare initiatives and climate that would be “transformative.” He and the Democrats meant it. Their goal was to make the federal government a permanent prop beneath any conceivable imperfection, setback or loss in the lives of the American people.
