A gender studies professor says the consequences of Saskatchewan\u0027s new pronoun consent policy at schools will be harsher than many realize.
If the name and pronouns policy becomes law, Premier Moe will create chaos in Saskatchewan schools., Premier Scott Moe will create chaos in Saskatchewan schools if he legislates his “Use of Preferred Name and Pronouns by Students” policy notwithstanding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.Peers often call transgender students their former name and assigned pronouns with the intent to cause harm. This is, obviously to any adult, bullying. Teachers are required to address bullying.
Students — whether 2SGLBTQ+ or not — will defend trans friends by loudly and consistently calling them by their chosen name and pronouns, day in and day out, in defiance of and drowning out their teachers. Students will not stop just because adults do.Under Premier Moe’s law, it is unlikely that any trans kid’s pronouns will be used at school — even with parental consent — because teachers will fear backlash from other parents.
This will happen here. Parents who object to any mention of transgender people in front of their child will not accept this morning’s classroom conversation about respecting gender pronouns because it supported a trans kid with parental consent. If LGBQ teachers remain in their roles, workplace harassment claims will skyrocket and collegiality will erode. In this climate, lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer people will not enter teacher education programs nor graduate seeking careers in Saskatchewan schools. If you believe that parents should be involved in their child’s life, I agree with you.
