Opinion: San Diegans weigh in on what Balboa Park needs most [Opinion]
The problem is recent mayors and council members have neglected the park to the point that, unless the priorities of the mayor and council radically change, repairs and future needs will not be accomplished, let alone exciting new “wants.” Politicians talked voters into abandoning any citywide vote for council members. Then they greatly expanded their power by replacing a university-trained and experienced city manager with whomever wins a popularity contest for mayor.
Unfortunately, abundant non-native weeds such as garland chrysanthemum and Sahara mustard have transformed the canyon. Florida Canyon needs a dedicated crew of weed managers. If the city cannot afford staff, I recommend it partner with volunteers from organizations like the California Native Plant Society and empower them to get these weeds under control and reclaim the beauty of the canyon.
The current various parking lots can be converted to restaurants, parks, museums, shops, gardens, a cafeteria-style area a la Liberty Station and/or a food truck area with picnic tables. The city also leases city-owned buildings in the park to private groups for $1 a year. Those leases must be amended to require tenants to pay for maintenance of those buildings. The use of city tax laws to fund the zoo should also be repealed, since the zoological society is more than capable of funding zoo infrastructure and operations.I live in Encinitas. My husband is partially disabled.
