San Diegans should hope that new Sheriff Kelly Martinez thrives, and resist rushing to judgment at the outset of an unusually long six-year term, a one-time statewide change to align sheriff’s races with quadriennal presidential elections. There will be plenty of time for judgment, and lots to judge. But it’s the department’s inexcusable, inordinate jail deaths over more than a decade that make Martinez’s decision tofrom a core promise of her successful 2022 campaign so viscerally disheartening.
. From 2012 to last year, the county paid at least $7.9 million to resolve legal claims over wrongful jail deaths — much more than in the previous decade. It mattered that Martinez vowed to be transparent about jail tragedies.
