Opinion: San Diego taxpayers should challenge the validity of the new trash fee measure [Opinion]

Did Measure B really pass? This “fee” is being assessed to what was previously part of our property tax. Because no one is reducing our property tax to continue providing trash service, I think this is really an additional tax.

Measure B “passed” by less than a percentage point. Taxes, on the other hand, require a two-thirds majority to pass. Just because the proponents of the measure are calling it a fee, it is really an added tax. Calling a tax a fee doesn’t make it so.With the passage of Measure A , Measure B and Measure C , it has become apparent just how easy it is to get ballot measures passed.

The formula is simple: Find a measure that you want passed that only taxes or negatively impacts a segment of our population in San Diego, and it’s a done deal. If the rest of the people in San Diego see any benefit at all and they aren’t required to actually pay the tax or suffer a negative impact, why wouldn’t they vote yes?
