Opinion | 'That we are all imperfect is precisely why we need a principled role model like Silas Soule.'

In the summer of 2020, that thinking prevailed. My neighbors chose Central Park as the new name of our northeast Denver neighborhood that had, until then, memorialized a former mayor and a Ku Klux Klan member. We amended a wrong, but we missed an opportunity to elevate a role model.

Hemphill Family Collection , restored by Sand Creek and the Tragic End of a Lifeway author Louis Kraft Today, many of us may see ourselves in Soule. Who would kill an innocent soul? But, at the time, Soule’s actions were hardly popular. Colorado media celebrated Sand Creek: The Rocky Mountain News had called for the “active extermination against the red devils.” The governor called for atrocities against indigenous peoples. For many contemporary Coloradans, Soule was not testifying against a villain: He was vilifying a hero.

Principle, not populism, is desperately scarce today. Take the decision by Colorado’s state retiree fund, PERA, last month to justly divest from Moscow-owned bonds in support of Ukraine. This came after years of refusal, under the guise of “fiduciary responsibility,” to adopt a principled social responsibility policy of divestment against all genocidal aggressors.
