Undecided voters are fronted with a choice between the Coalition - their boring old Toyota Camry - or Labor, that racy but unreliable 1990’s Alfa Romeo, write Caroline Di Russo.
The Coalition remains bruised after a term littered by natural disasters and a pandemic; and while the economy remains largely intact, there just seems to be a niggling annoyance with the current government. The election campaign hit the ALP leadership like a length of 4 by 2. Partially due to a lack of match fitness and partially due to a lack of policy depth and strategic messaging.
And while I’m still scarred from Newspoll figures in the lead up to the 2019 election, the results of the latest Newspoll are narrowly instructive. This looks a bit like 2019 all over again: a stronger Labor 2PP but a question mark over the opposition leader. This tells me neither party nor leader is particularly popular but, given the whiff of economic uncertainty, people appear to be tending towards the devil they know.
And the results have been varied. Both Jim Chalmers and Jason Clare have been articulate and substantially better at pushing the Labor message.
