The president of NSW's Volunteer Fire Fighters Association says the state and federal governments have ignored the fact members have racked up expenses, including petrol spent driving to fire fronts, fighting the blazes."Why aren't we picking up the tab for legitimate expenses like we do for paid people?" he said.Mick Holton told Today it was "wrong" to expect volunteers to attend fires with no form of compensation.
Reports of firefighters paying for their own fuel and face masks has prompted the Fire Fighter Association to speak out. Mr Holton is also calling for improved respiratory protection saying volunteers have used crowd funding to pay for smoke masks."We know that there are carcinogens in the smoke. We know levels of carbon monoxide and other poison s are in the smoke. And if volunteers are raising concerns saying they believe the respiratory protection they are given isn't adequate we at least should listen to them.
