The opposition has claimed Labor has been duplicitous in its backflip on its fuel efficiency standards as Coalition members say they weren't briefed on the policy change.

Australia is on the cusp of getting vehicle efficiency standards which would impose mandatory CO2 emission targets on all cars sold, but the Opposition argues the policy is not"on the side of consumers" and disadvantages them. The opposition has claimed Labor has been duplicitous in its backflip on its fuel efficiency standards as Coalition members say they weren't briefed on the policy change.

While the NVES would not prohibit manufacturers from producing and supplying their vehicles of choice, critics have argued that endorsing electric vehicles and other emission friendly cars would drive up the prices of their fuel and diesel counterparts, leaving Australians with a no-win outcome. “If you want to buy an electric car, good luck to you… your money, but if you want to buy and sometimes in fact need to buy a petrol or diesel car, to do your job, to go about your livelihood, to take around a big family, you should not face punishing taxes from the government.”

“Prices for Toyota Hilux, our Rangers, our D-Max, our Rav4 hybrids even are all going to go up under this plan announced today. So it's barely a change,” she told The Kenny Report. “We're smoothing the emissions trajectory for light commercial vehicles. The new vehicle efficiency standard targets for passenger vehicles catch‑up to comparable economies by the end of the decade. We're adjusting what is known as 'the break point', recognising heavier vehicles emit more,” the federal transport minister said in her press conference.
