For the good of the country and its own credibility and electability the Coalition needs to base its policy on evidence not exaggeration and misinformation.
The Coalition’s stance on nuclear power and vehicles emissions standards has again demonstrated it is captive to the fossil fuel industry . They are spoilers and have no commitment to real action on climate change. Labelling the new vehicle efficiency standard as a “ute tax” that will push up the cost of many models is the latest scare in the tradition of “electric vehicles will end the long weekend” and carbon pricing would result in the “$100 Sunday roast”.
I accept that changes have to happen slowly. But if the Landcruiser, Everest and others are going to be treated as light commercial vehicles, then the licensing and registration rules should also apply. Insist that they can only be driven by someone with the appropriate licence. Tax them at commercial rates. Insist on regular inspections. Only offer tax deductibility if the owner has an ABN. Emissions need to go down. Making them commercial vehicles will speed this process up.
