Victorians handling an estate worth more than $2 million could be paying almost double the equivalent charges in NSW and South Australia.

Victorians with estates worth up to $250,000 are to have their probate fees waived, but those with assets of more than $2 million are set to pay thousands of dollars more, under changes announced by the Allan government on Monday.

“This is effectively the imposition of a death tax by stealth, to have massive increased in the amount of money that grieving families have to pay when a loved one dies to get probate,” O’Brien said. “Victoria will continue to have lower probate fees than comparable states such as NSW and South Australia for estates valued less than $2 million. This accounts for almost 90 per cent of estates probated in Victoria,” Erdogan said.Estates between $500,000 and $1 million will be charged around $1000, while estates worth between $1 million and $2 million will cost $2400.
