Optus outage:
Optus has started restoring some telecommunications services following a massive outage to phone and internet services that has prevented some people dialling 000 in an emergency but has not explained the cause of the chaos., the social media site formerly known as Twitter, that “some services across fixed and mobile are now gradually being restored”.“This may take a few hours for all services to recover, and different services may restore at different sites over that time.
Optus had yet to provide “a precise timeframe” on when the faults would be fixed, she said. It was too early discuss compensation for businesses hit by the outage, but they should keep receipts of additional expenses. Throughout the morning, phone users were unable to make or receive calls, or use the internet on Optus’ mobile network. Users of Optus resellers such as Amaysim and Coles Mobile were also down.Singtel’s shares slid more than 4 per cent to trade at $S2.37 in Singapore after the country’s stock exchange opened on Wednesday. Financial analysts warned the outage could result in Optus losing customers in Australia, which contributes around half of Singtel’s earnings.
Other organisations left in the same position included Computershare, Canberra’s NXTBUS bus information app, medical centres, local councils and educational institutions.Sources in the telecommunications industry speculated Optus had suffered a hardware failure in its core network, given that internet and mobile services were hit, and that it could include routers.
Users of mobile phone plans supplied by the Vocus Group, which owns brands such as Dodo mobile, as well as Aussie Broadband, were hit by the outage because the plans use Optus’ mobile networks.
