The three-year sting that saw the AFP catch more than 200 alleged criminals could see members of organised crime groups get back to basics in the way they communicate, a criminologist says.

Australia's criminal underbelly will likely ditch encrypted devices and "harden themselves", a criminologist and former detective says. The three-year sting was carried out in conjunction with the FBITerry Goldsworthy's comments come in the wake of Australia's largest policing operation — Operation Ironside, known globally as Trojan Shield.

Phones loaded with encrypted app AN0M, that alleged criminals thought they could trust, allowed the Australian Federal Police to monitor their communications in real time. "The fact that it ran for three years and some of them weren't getting intercepted by police would have just made them more comfortable and they would have become looser with their communications.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said the communications were "brazen", with alleged criminals making no attempt to hide their activities — including threats to kill — through coded messages.
