For Hispanic women who have just arrived in San Diego and are uncertain what to do and where to go, maybe feeling alone, there is an organization in San Diego County that can help. During the pandemic, Edith Fuentes joined Facebook groups for Hispanic women and realized how lonely newly arrived women in San Diego felt.
People were posting on Facebook, 'I'm so lonely, does anyone want to go get coffee?' Fuentes thought this was dangerous, and set out to organize safe gatherings for these women to meet. She went from a Facebook group to teaming up with Carolina Torres, who already had experience in creating civic associations. Together they formed the organization Magnolias in April 2023. 'There are many issues between mental health and immigration,' Fuentes said. Despite 30 years in San Diego and having family in Tijuana, she also suffered from migratory grief, named for the losses experienced during immigration and adapting to a new country. Torres has been in San Diego for a little over two years
