Queensland coach Billy Slater made significant changes to the squad for the State of Origin series opener, dropping backrower David Fifita and selecting Jaydn Su’A as his replacement. Tom Dearden secured the No.6 jersey. The Maroons bench featured debutant J’maine Hopgood, alongside Harry Grant, Mo Fotuaika, and Selwyn Cobbo.
Meanwhile, the NRL defended the Bunker's decision to deny Storm centre Jack Howarth a try in the Grand Final, releasing footage that showed an arm under the ball at the crucial moment. NSW coach Michael Maguire responded to the series opener loss with a number of changes, dropping Sharks players Cameron McInnes and Nicho Hynes. Cameron Murray returned at lock, and Mitchell Moses was named at halfback. Latrell Mitchell came in for the suspended Joseph Suaalii, and Mitch Barnett replaced Matt Burton as 18th Man.
