Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2'
Despite the controversy surrounding the magical franchise's creator, J.K. Rowling, HBO's adaptation of all seven of the Harry Potter novels is on its way, officially debuting on Christmas Day 2026. The premiere of the first season, which will adapt the opening novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is expected to be one of the biggest TV events of the year, especially when accounting for the 277 million organic views earned by the recent trailer in its opening 48 hours across non-paid platforms, a record for HBO.
The cast has been slowly filling up now for quite some time, with many of the biggest names confirmed. This includes Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. However, one of the most famous names in the Wizarding World, even if we should fear saying it, is Voldemort, and we still await any confirmation on who will be portraying the Dark Lord. This is likely due to the character not appearing in full-bodied capacity until the fourth installment.
In the films, the character was so expertly portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, and many have wondered if he would reprise the role for the series. However, although the acclaimed actor once thought that was a possibility, too much time has now passed, and he has officially pulled out of the running, according to an interview with Fiennes on The Claudia Winkleman Show. 'I remember being asked the question once we’d shot the total film series, would I reprise the part, and this was some years ago. I said, ‘Yes, I’d love to,'' Fiennes admitted.'But then nothing’s happened and I think that ship has sailed.' The actor then awarded his blessing to one of the names long-rumored for the role: Tilda Swinton.'But I’ll tell you, Tilda Swinton was mentioned somewhere as being a contender, and I think she would be amazing,' Fiennes added.

Who is the Favorite to Play Voldemort? As it stands, the front-runner for the role of the Dark Lord remains Paul Bettany of MCU fame, after the persisting rumors about Cillian Murphy were finally put to bed following the actor's scathing response to yet another question from reporters. Supposedly HBO's favored candidate, Bettany himself recently broke his silence on the rumors, saying,'I haven’t heard anything about that …. I’m a big fan of the IP, and I’m a big fan of HBO, but nobody has called me up about that.'
