Volunteers from Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park have made four trips to Przemysl, Poland, this year to help refugees as Russia continues its war in Ukraine.

Church members have traveled to the Poland several times this year to help with a refugee crisis near Poland's border as the war continues in Ukraine.
Each trip lasted about 10 days and included 12 to 16 church members and are part of a larger effort in which churches from across the U.S. have been meeting with local and religious leaders in Poland to find ways to help, Carroll said. Maureen Battista, a church member who went on the first trip in February, said the volunteers helped where needed in the center, like sorting supplies, preparing food, playing with children and cleaning. Watterworth went on the trip with the second group at the end of February and decided to stay until the final group returned earlier this month, she said. After arriving, Watterworth said she wanted to stay longer because many volunteers have left and the Polish relief workers need support.“All the volunteers have gone away. It’s just the people who are getting paid that are there. You have very minimal help, but you still have refugees coming in.
“They’re getting on another train to some place where they don’t know. They don’t know the language. They have no idea what’s in store for them,” Battista said.
