I’m all in favour of these attempts to jazz the telecast up, to make it more viewer friendly, to keep things snappy. But by the same token I really do get the frustration from all those whose awards have been shunted to the we-are-not-worthy zone.
And so, apparently, do the producers. The sound design award was one of eight given before the telecast in a bid to speed things up. But here we are with the nominees getting a rapid-fire roll call, the winner being announced and even the recipients taking to the stage to give a short acceptance speech.
. Rita Moreno, who also starred in that musical, won an Oscar for the same role in the 1961 version of the musical. And she is not just a “openly queer woman of colour, an Afro-Latina” actor as she said in her acceptance speech, she is the first openly queer actor to win at the Oscars.
