The film's screenwriter Anthony McCarten previously wrote the scripts for which three of the last five best actor Oscar winners won their statuettes.
, which debuted at the Royal & Derngate Theatre in Northampton, England in June 2017, and which McCarten then expanded into the script. The film, however, spent quite a bit of time in post-production, so McCarten, in between the unveiling of the play and the world premiere of the film at the Telluride Film Festival on Aug. 31, also had time to write a book,, published in January of this year.
