In a year of extreme power, crazy speeds, elegant smarts, ’70s nostalgia and an irate flood of emails from electric acolytes and petrol heads, one car takes the cake.
It was another tough year in so many ways, yet the automotive world pushed on at a cracking pace. And what were the highlights? Here are my ten personal selections, in no particular order.I reviewed 49 new cars, squeezed between interviews, trend features, tech stories, book reviews and a slice of history or two. A few of the cars were electric, one was hydrogen, there were some diesels, some very powerful petrol cars, and a growing number of hybrids.
Of those I did get behind the wheel of, I’m going to nominate the Ferrari Roma coupe as the most classically elegant, the Land Rover Defender as the best reimagining of a classic, and the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class as the cleverest and most comfortable . The best overall? Keep reading.If the car industry was a junior football team, Maserati would be Most Improved Player. Its spectacular MC20 mid-engined supercar is a thoroughly original package with superb design and engineering.
I tested a couple of Model 3 variants this year, a decade since I drove my first Tesla, the Roadster. Back then, it was a work-in-progress wrapped in a repurposed Lotus body. There was little to indicate its maker would see out the next year or two, let alone become the world’s most valuable carmaker. Yet this year Tesla passed $US1 trillion in market cap – while being chaired from Sydney suburbia by Australia’s Robyn Denholm.about it too, one of the more fascinating interviews I’ve undertaken.
