For the first time, near real-time disclosure of political donations shows who's funding the WA election. We crunched the numbers on where the money is coming from.
For the first time, near real-time disclosure of political donations is showing who's funding the 2025 WA election.
"The party with the most money doesn't necessarily win, but the party with the most money has an advantage when it comes to advertising and promoting its policies and promoting its candidates," political commentator Peter Kennedy said.Looking at direct gifts to each party, it's actually the Liberals who come out on top.
Interestingly, private citizens make up a far greater proportion of the Liberals' and Greens' donations than those of WA Labor — which benefits significantly from companies, its own MPs and unions.WA's fortunes are built on mining, with royalties accounting for about 20 per cent of the state government's revenue this year, so it's little surprise which sector is responsible for the largest political donations.
Joo-Cheong Tham, law professor at the University of Melbourne and director of the Centre for Public Integrity, said improved transparency was all about giving voters "the relevant information when determining their voting choices". Woodside, which said it didn't donate to parties but would sometimes pay to attend events, did so to "understand the policy environment within which we operate" adding events also provided "the opportunity to contribute and inform policy dialogue pertaining to our business".But Belinda Edwards, whose analysis of political donations was published in the Australian Journal of Public Administration had a different view, based on her research.
