Our recommendation for Texas House District 70, Democratic primary | Opinion
Dallas Morning News EditorialThis editorial is part of the Dallas Morning News editorial board’s slate of recommendations for the 2022 primary.One of the travesties of American politics is the decennial redistricting process that in so many places has seen the erosion of genuinely competitive political districts where candidates have to grapple seriously with the other side’s ideas and appeal to a broad group of voters.
In the Democratic field, three capable people are running, and each brings knowledge about the issues and a commitment to public service to the race. They also bring something sorely lacking in most races: a willingness and a need to balance what voters from the other party might think. But more than that, Sanchez, 36, strikes us as the candidate who best understands voters in this district. People in the new District 70 have shown they are interested in candidates who work for solutions for Texas. They are far less interested in the sort of showboating tough talk that we see in primaries in less competitive districts.
