It was a Zoom call that changed my work life. Ecologist Nico Eisenhauher was on the other end of the line, his head bobbing up and down as he walked on his treadmill. “Do you walk all day long?” I asked. “Do you have any trouble typing?”Careers’s Working Life section, a weekly series that shines a spotlight on challenges scientists face as they pursue their careers. But I was also asking for my own benefit.
The Zoom call convinced me it was worth a shot. So, 3 days after our call, I ordered a treadmill of my own—and I’ve spent a few hours each workday walking on it ever since. It keeps me more alert. I have no trouble typing. And I’ve walked more than 400 kilometers on it over the past 4 months. It’s a work routine I plan to continue long into the future.
