Out of Africa: Debutant Neser and Labuschagne flip the Ashes mould | malcolmconn
The marvellous Marnus Labuschagne, fresh from another century, and star debutant Michael Neser are new-age Australians. When another South African-born England captain, Andrew Strauss, landed in Australia for the 2010-11 series he was unapologetic about the number of players in his squad who had originated from overseas.
Neser, who scored a quickfire 35 in Australia’s first innings before taking a wicket with his second ball in Test cricket, was nine when his family was carjacked in South Africa and decided they wanted a new life somewhere else. The eruption of joy when Neser dismissed Haseeb Hameed was summed up by Labuschagne.
He’d look right at home in an Akubra chewing on a strand of hay as part of some come outback tourist ad.
