‘Out of control’: Big stink as bins overflow in central Sydney | michaelkoziol
Clover Moore’s council is under growing pressure to fix an “out of control” waste problem in central Sydney as rubbish piles up on city streets and residents say their bins are not being collected.
While some people blamed outsourcing and pointed the finger at Cleanaway, the council’s cleaning contractor, Scully said staff shortages due to COVID were affecting everyone. If drivers were filling in on an unfamiliar route they might miss some collections, she said. Fahey said a load of dumped rubbish on Crick Avenue, Elizabeth Bay, was finally collected on Thursday after he complained to Scully directly. “It [was] now a holiday camp for rats,” he said.Fahey said the council “treats Potts Point the same as they treat other areas – they don’t appreciate that this is one of the highest density population areas in the entire country and cleansing is vital”.
“I’ve booked things in on multiple occasions and it will take a week for things to be picked up,” she said. “The bin chickens well and truly go crazy in the back lane. It’s just revolting. The rats we see around here are not small.”
