This latest fashion development is a result of Nike’s 4-plus-1 policy on uniforms. Clubs can have four uniforms and a “City Connect” uni. Last year, the Rangers wore five tops: white, blue, gray, red and powder blue, their Sunday best. Red was reserved for home Friday games.

All things considered, I may not be the right guy to pass judgment on which colors stay or go. My children live in fear of what I might wear in public. In fact, for the purposes of this column I asked Jake, my oldest, who, like his sister, Madeleine, was named best-dressed at Hillcrest, which article of clothing offended him the most.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, powder blue just seems, well, pleasant. Like my mother always said and should apply to the Rangers, too, if nothing else, at least be nice. Powder blue is especially pastoral on days when the roof is closed. From way up in the pressbox, they look like little puffs of blissful blue sky floating above the fake grass.
