One outback resident says she forked out almost $4,000 to get home after a 48-hour Rex flight delay, and feels 'left in the dark' over the airline's failure to communicate.
Residents in remote communities feel they were "left in the dark" after an almost 48-hour long flight with little communication from route operator Regional Express Airlines .Community members worry that fly-in fly-out essential service workers like doctors and teachers will be reluctant to return because of frequent delays.
Passengers say a plane on March 1 appeared bogged. The airline says "landing gear transitioned through soft surface" off the Mornington Island taxi-way.Mr McShane relocated to the remote Indigenous community of Normanton in Queensland's Gulf country, a region serviced by Regional Express Airlines , almost two years ago. Most recently on March 1, he was booked to travel from Normanton to Cairns, 700 kilometres away, to see his children at boarding school.
"Is that another nurse or teacher lost? We can't attract people at the best of times. We absolutely need these people — have we just lost another one?" he said. On a separate Rex service to that which Mr McShane was booked on, Ms Rainbow was recently scheduled to fly from Cairns and arrive at her home town of Normanton by 2pm, via Mornington Island. She made it as far as Mornington Island before grounding, reboarding hours later, and returning to Cairns."Most of us were from community, passengers voiced our concerns, but it didn't matter."
