While cyclists close to the city enjoy the lion’s share of bikeways, nothing has come of plans to provide safe passage for those in outer suburbs, according to two cycling groups.
Cycling groups have accused the Queensland government and Brisbane City Council of ignoring the need for dedicated and safe bike routes outside the inner city.
“Every year we hope the state and council budgets will invest in addressing the absence of a safe cycling corridor in the western suburbs, and every year we are disappointed,” said Chris Cox, co-convenor of the Brisbane West Bicycle User Group. “The people of the western suburbs get left with a choice of riding on a deadly main road or convoluted, hilly side routes, also without any suitable infrastructure.
The lack of dedicated bike routes in Brisbane’s western suburbs is forcing people to drive, according to cycling advocates. This map of cycle infrastructure shows no facilities west of Toowong.“Nothing has been followed through to decisions to build anything,” Demack said. “There has been planning work, but we haven’t seen any outcome.”
