Shaukat Chaudhry told how his workers were left in fear by the raid which saw 14 Home Office enforcement officers storming the premises on a busy Friday.
A takeaway owner says he is being forced out of business after a Home Office raid where three of his staff were arrested and then “de-arrested” hours later.
Mr Chaudhry, 55, who came to Oban in 2007, said this is the second time he has been raided despite his foreign-born staff having the right to live and work in the UK. He told the Daily Record: “I am planning to leave Oban. There is no place left for me and my staff are so terrified they don’t want to work here.”
Mr Chaudhry said: “All our staff are legal and this kind of raid and arrest has a bad impact on our business and reputation. What kind of respect do we have when four staff were taken to a van in front of public, wrongly and disrespectfully and forcing the business to close? The pizza oven was damaged as food turned black. Kebabs were also left to burn. Mr Chaudhry said: “Why did they not allow them to put the ovens off? It’s absolutely shocking, you can see them standing in front of burning pizza in the CCTV video.
He said that from the street it must have looked like a big police operation but repeated: “They are not illegal workers.” The businessman, who has invested heavily in Oban, opened Mondo’s restaurant next to the takeaway two years ago. There were demands last night for a full investigation into the raid last Friday night. Ian Murray, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, said: “The home office could easily have asked Mr Chaudhry for all the paperwork for his staff, which I understand he has.
