Locals have been left outraged over a plan by the South Australian government to ban visitors from outback tourist destination Lake Eyre.
A proposal to ban visitors from entering a popular attraction in South Australia , in order to protect the land for traditional owners , has left locals outraged.
“But this is wrong. But the government's kept on persisting with this. I don't really blame the Arabana”. “They’re not happy. They’re not happy at all. The only people who are happy are the people who run joy flights, because that’s the only way you’re going to see the lake. Everybody else is very peed off, to put it politely,” he said.
“I am aware that they have myths of bunyip-like creatures that live on the lake. Many years ago, that was quite valid when young children might have wandered onto the lake and died. Most people in Australia know about the bunyip myth," he said. Lake Eyre is a registered site under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 and is a 9,500 square kilometre dry lake bed, sitting within the 1.3 million hectare Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park.
