Incumbent Stephen Crichton, however, has endured indifferent form prompting speculation his Blues jersey was under threat. NRL360 host Braith Anasta questioned whether Daley could consider picking Staggs and Mitchell in the centres and shifting Crichton to the wing.
“ played a grand final in 2021 on the wing. I’m sure he could handle it if you didn’t want to pick a specialist,” Panthers and Blues legend Greg Alexander replied. Code Sports’ Brent Read, however, was dumbfounded that Crichton would be considered in any other position but centre.
“How can you leave Steve Crichton out of one of the centre spots. That’s outrageous. He’s arguably the best centre in the game,” Read said.
“No one has dropped him. Kotoni Staggs has been in great form and it’s about getting the best players on the field and the best players at the moment would be Staggs and Latrell in the centres with Crichton and Brian To’o on the wing.
”Mitchell has been in devastating form for South Sydney in the centres while Staggs is enjoying his best season for the Broncos to put him in the mix for a recall for the first time since debuting for his state back in 2022. Staggs, however, was suspended for two matches after elbowing Hugo Savala, meaning his next game will potentially be in the Origin arena if he’s selected.
While Read agreed Staggs was worthy of selection, he was adamant it should not come at the expense of Crichton. Staggs is in form and Crichton isn’t … If you can have an in form Staggs and Crichton still in the team on the wing. He’s 6’5. : So he’s not good enough to play in the centres so you punt him to the wing where he hasn’t played.
That’s what you’re saying. You’re saying your picking Staggs ahead of Crichton cause he’s in better form? : Neither are you … I don’t think it’s a smart move. If you want to do it, do it!
While Daley is expected to roll with two of Mitchell, Crichton and Staggs at centre, it’s a much more open race for the two wing spots. To’o is probably assured of one with Tom Jenkins, Josh Addo-Carr and Campbell Graham other names in the running.
