'Of all the weeks this could have happened, this was probably the worst.'
The historic storm that dumped more than 25 inches of rain on Fort Lauderdale this week has also resulted in a travel nightmare.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport shut down on Wednesday evening because of the storm and didn’t reopen until Friday morning. And that resulted in significant flight cancellations. “It was just a mess. We had to sleep on the ground. The food was closed, most of the restaurants were closed. We were starving,” Sarah Weldeabzghi, a traveler, told a local TV station.
Among the carriers that fly in and out of Fort Lauderdale, Spirit Airlines is the most active. Spirit didn’t immediately respond to a MarketWatch request about how it’s handling the backlog situation, but the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that its first departure was scheduled for shortly after Friday at 1 p.m.
