Italy’s ballot campaign on cannabis decriminalization has achieved over 500,000 signatures in one week, but it is trapped in the bureaucratic quagmire.

Before, Italian citizens were asked to sign petitions for the ballots in person. That procedure needed time for proponents to request authorizations and organize centers for gathering signatures. But the electronic signatures have streamlined the process.Although proponents have collected the signatures before September 30, they are facing bureaucratic issues.

Proponents of the ballot campaign for cannabis decriminalization registered the referendum question in September 2021. “Such a rejection lies in the political will. Political institutions know that municipalities’ workload has increased because of Italian local elections scheduled in October 2021. Proponents of other ballot campaigns have been allowed to postpone filing their documentation to the Supreme Court of Cassation by October 30. They had to do the same with us,” she said.

For the right-wing League leader Matteo Salvini, the referendum on cannabis decriminalization is not on the top priorities of the country. “Drug is always drug” and “drug is death,” he continued to say during The League’s tour to support its candidates for the Italian local elections scheduled in October 2021.

If the bureaucratic fulfillments are resolved, the Supreme Court of Cassation will verify the legitimacy of all signatures.
