Overlooked women are relying on Doctor TikTok to self-diagnose with ADHD, but it's complex

But social media influencers have driven a boom in awareness of these symptoms. And many women digesting a newfound abundance of ADHD content on social media are finally able to see themselves for the first time, accepted into a community that validates their struggles with its own style of humour and a whole new language for what they had once seen as character quirks – or failings.

For Kate Tynan too, from Stockport, her self-diagnosis this year has helped her cultivate greater self-compassion. Things that she might previously have labelled as signs of selfishness or incompetence, like forgetting her mother was going into hospital, or being consistently late for the school run, she can now understand better.

Women’s hormonal cycles are known to impact ADHD symptoms; more than half of women with ADHD surveyed bysaid their symptoms grew so severe during their forties and fifties that they said menopause was the period in which “ADHD had the greatest overall impact on their lives”. One video I watch, titled “how to spot signs of ADHD in someone’s house”, lists multiple unfinished drinks and half-painted rooms as being potential “red flags” for ADHD. Another says nail-biting and singing out loud at random are hidden signs. Anecdotally, these observations may hold weight for some. But with the reach of, videos pointing to diagnostic clues for mental health disorders with no scientific grounding feel irresponsible, at best.
