‘Overturning’ NT alcohol bans will require ‘60 per cent’ of community voting in favour

Political Editor Andrew Clennell correctly predicted extra funding for the Northern Territory and a return of alcohol bans in vulnerable communities, as confirmed during Question Time.

“If you want to overturn those bans in these communities, you’ll need to produce a plan, you’ll need to have it approved, and you’ll need 60 per cent of that community to vote for an overturning of that ban,” he said.

“They were hopeful the Northern Territory government would do it first, they have, so they didn’t intervene, the feds didn’t have to come over the top – I’m sure that $250 million had a bit a bit to do with that quite frankly.”
