Britain's busiest shopping street is set to ban motor traffic under proposed powers for the mayor.
The Labour mayor's pedestrianisation proposal is supported by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who said it would give the popular shopping district "the boost it needs".
Oxford Street is one of the world's busiest shopping areas, with about half a million visitors on average each day. He said: "Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain's retail sector, but there's no doubt that it has suffered hugely over the last decade.Khan added he was working with the government, retailers and businesses to restore the street to its "former glory".
"These plans are shovel ready, have had the support of retailers and the local community and were intended to deliver significant economic growth whilst also securing a successful future for our thriving neighbourhoods in the West End."The Labour-run council's £90m plans would have seen changes such as wider footpaths, more seating and trees being planted - but stopped short of introducing traffic restrictions.
