Opinion Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy: Why are the Commonwealth Games still a thing?
Standing here on the Black Sabbath Bridge, overlooking the murky canal below, it’s impossible not to feel Commonwealth Games fever kicking in.
“Imagine an Olympics without the United States, China and Russia. Then imagine a track meet dominated by sprinters from Wales.”This Commonwealth Games, to be held in Birmingham in the West Midlands of England, is being met with the same indifference as other years.Advertisement Downsizing doesn’t make them less valid, especially to the 5000-or-so athletes who have converged on Birmingham. It doesn’t make them less valid to sports such as netball, squash and — yes — lawn bowls. Nor to the para sports, which have been integrated into a multi-sport carnival.
